History of Fuerteventura Airport

At the turn of the 20th century, the island of Fuerteventura became an essential stop for all planes flying between the Peninsula and the Canary Islands due to its position on the route from Cabo Juby to Las Palmas and Tenerife. Between the sea and the Tetir road, Lneas Aéreas Postales Espaolas (LAPE) built a secondary airport in the 1930s.

In 1940, construction began on a military airport in the Tefaa municipality to support the Archipelago Defence Plan. In January 1959, the airport officially opened to the public for use by civil aircraft from around the country and the world. Since commercial flights have increased and given the airport's distance from the island's most populated area of Puerto de Cabras, a new site for the airport has become a pressing consideration.

Due to the island's topography, plans to relocate the airport closer to the island's capital were studied. Last but not least, it was decided to relocate the facility to Los Estancos, only five kilometers from Puerto Rosario. When the new airport in its current location opened in 1952, operations at Tefa were halted.

The airport had to be relocated to El Matorral along the coast due to rising demand and the problems caused by its location (constant gusting winds).

It was a major accomplishment when Puerto del Rosario's El Matorral airport opened to the public on September 14, 1969. An Iberia Airlines Focker 27 flew between Las Palmas and Fuerteventura. Lanzarote was the first plane to land on the new runway.

The first international flights from El Matorral Airport to Europe were operated by Condor in 1973, connecting Dusseldorf, Germany, and Puerto del Rosario. Since 1978, the airport has undergone a series of upgrades to ensure that its operations continue to meet the needs of passengers despite a significant increase in the number of operations.

More than 1,600,000 passengers used the airport in 1992, necessitating terminal upgrades and plane parking. A new terminal building, an aircraft apron, a taxiway parallel to the runway, a power plant, and a new access road were all built beginning in 1994.

The parking lot expansion and the detour on the Puerto de Rosario-Matorral road, which add about two kilometers of new pavement (of which 1.5 kilometers are double lanes), are now complete.
